Wikimedia Commons (often abbreviated as Wikicommons or simply Commons) is a Wikimedia Foundation project created on September 7, 2004, which aims to serve as a file store images and other media formats for the rest of the projects of the foundation. All files should have been released under a free license (such as free documentation license GNU) or in the public domain, currently has more than thirteen million free media files.
It is based on a wiki set up so that the files contained therein are available in all other wikis Wikimedia projects transparently. This allows centralized management of these files in all versions of Wikipedia, Wikibooks, etc..
You can edit Commons pages without prior registration, but registration is required to upload images.
Before Commons, there was a significant duplication of effort between Wikimedia projects and in different language versions of them. For a file that existed in a wiki could be used in other, must be uploaded back to each of them.
In March 2004, the user Erik Möller proposes the creation of a centralized repository of media files, which would be named “Wikimedia Commons” and launched on September 7 of the same year. In late October, a modification of the software by himself first allowed Commons files that could be used directly in other wikis, without having to upload them separately to each of them. In November, chose the project logo, designed by Reid Beels user, who had originally created for Wikinews, having been rejected.
